About Your Procedure

Upon arrival to the Endoscopy Center, a staff member will greet you at the front desk. After signing a facility and procedure consent form and a HIPPA form, an identification band will be placed on your wrist. You will also be asked to provide us with the name and telephone number of the person who will be driving you home. Plan on being with us for about two hours.

An endoscopy nurse will bring you into the pre-procedure area where you will have a medical assessment and an IV started. Your blood pressure, pulse and respirations will also be monitored. Your physician will meet with you and review your medical history and medications that you are currently taking. You will also be seen by an anesthesiologist or a certified nurse anesthetist who will discuss your sedation options.

Next, you will be brought by stretcher into the procedure room. Nasal oxygen will be applied. Resting flat on your left side, you will receive sedatives through your intravenous catheter. Once you become drowsy and/or fall asleep, your physician will perform the 20-30 minute procedure. Every effort will be made to ensure your comfort during your procedure.

Following your procedure, you will be brought into the recovery area. If you had a colonoscopy, you will be asked to release any excess air that may still be present in your bowel. We continue to monitor your vital signs while you rest. Once fully awake, you will finally be given something to eat and drink. After removing your IV catheter, you will be able to get dressed. Your nurse will review your written discharge instruction sheet with you. Your anesthesia provider will also check in on you to see if you are comfortable and have any questions.

Once your ride home is present, you will be accompanied to the conference room where you, and if you wish, your escort, will meet with your physician. Your physician will review the results of your procedure and discuss any follow up care that is needed. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions. You will then be free to return home.
